#Don't #Overuse #Hashtags

#Hashtags should be used to establish a connection between your brand and certain keywords, promotions or events.  Overuse of #Hashtags is not only annoying, but it also results in discrediting your brand when you have something you actually want to say.

Don't Use Social Media to Overtly Sell

Like all other channels, social media has its purpose.  Occasionally, you may have promotional items on your social channels. However, the primary purpose of social media is to build brand affinity and loyalty.  Focus your efforts on creating strong equity and connecting with your loyal fans.  The sales will soon follow.

Mix Up Your Posts

People tend to get bored very easily, even more so on social media.  The key to getting people to continuously go back to your brand pages is to offer a wide array of subjects to talk about and ways to display this content.

Tolerate Negativity

Social media allows for you to be in contact with a lot more brutally honest remarks.  Most of the time, this is a good thing since people love our products.  However, don’t get too upset at the occasional negative comment, it is a natural aspect of social media

Respond to Negative Remarks

In the event that you receive complaints or criticism, have a plan of action in place for how to manage. Work with legal, PR, and consumer affairs to draft this plan of action with pre-approved posts that help diffuse the situation.  Remember that some people will resort to social media for consumer complaints so you may have to take that role occasionally.

Proof Read EVERYTHING

You will become the laughing stock of branded social media if you accidentally misspell your words.  Treat it with the same care as POS, even though it is wayyy cheaper to create

Legal / PR Approval

Get legal and PR approval on all posts.  Nothing more needs to be said...

Don't Ignore Your Followers

Some great ideas and opportunities can come from your fans.  Listen to what they have to say and let them know you are listening.

Don't Be on An Island

Make sure you don’t close yourself off from the rest of your activation.  All social media should tie back to in-store activation in some shape or form.  Think of all activation with a true 360 approach.

Set Benchmarks and Goals

1.
Work on setting analytics and benchmark goals for your social media posts.  Everything is measurable in some way, try to determine what measurements are valuable for you and how they can be useful in developing future strategy.
